Hells Canyon - Boating
In part due to the popularity of summer rafting, spring and fall are the best seasons for other water play in Hells Canyon. (Besides less competition on the water, permits can be self-issued at any river portal. During the primary season -- the Friday before Memorial day through Sept. 10 -- permitting rules are much more complex, with reservations required and powerboat use limited to four days a week.) Jet boat trips up the Snake are a long tradition in the Hells Canyon area. Departing from Hells Gate State Park just south of Lewiston, these popular rides are a great way to see the canyon from the river without strenuous activity. If powerboating during the peak season, contact the national recreation area office in Clarkston, Wash., (509) 758-0270, for permit requirements.
